When one is redlining Simsbury, one must hike every trail. Like, every trail. True red-liners care about crossover paths and every side trail too.
And when one is redlining Simsbury, one must hike every non-trail trail. Say what?
First of all, “red-lining” is “walking every mile of every mapped trail in a particular area.” People redline the White Mountains in New Hampshire. If you do so, you can get a patch.
You get nothing for redlining Simsbury. Except my admiration. Which is actually better than a patch. I swear.
The Knapp property is a swamp. You can’t hike through a swamp. In fact, you can’t even park at this swamp. You must park at Meadow Pond Park on Hedgehog Lane and walk down the road for a minute.
Then you find a little walkway.
And you walk out to the observation platform and take in the red maple swamp.
Then you walk to the end of it and – HOLY CRAP! The platform sinks nearly into the water and emits a terrifying groaning sound as you spring back a few feet to relative safety and inspect the railing supports and notice why you almost sunk into the muck.
Then you curse the dang beavers, wonder who the sucker will be who ultimately gets dunked and then just walk back to your car, pleased that you’ve checked off another Simsbury Land Trust property.
